Shoes, Shoes, Shoes

September 25, 2009Yesterday my little sister Annie was reading Kristi and I a story she worte as an assignment for her writting class. The assignment was to write a story about a shoe, as so many fairy tales do. It got me to thinking, Why, in the world, do we have so many fairy tales about shoes?! And before you go and say there aren't all that many let me list a few for you, There's Cinderella of coarse with her glass slipper, then there is the crazy old coot(ahm, women) who lives in a shoe(why in the world someone would want to live in a shoe is beyond me, place must stink like the dickens), there is puss in boots, and there is Dorothy with her ruby red shoes to take her home. Then there are the tales of shoes that do amazing things, like transport you ten thousand leagues with each step or like hermes shoes that let him fly. Finally there are the many obseessed women and probably a few men who horde and collect shoes in the tens or hundreds. So my question to society is this, WHat is it that we find so facinating and mystical about so seemingly ordinary an object as a pair of shoes? Why do they continue to be an object of our adoration. Are shoes just a way of shielding our feet form the elements or adding something to our latest look. It would appear not. Let me know what you think

You forgot THE ELVES AND THE SHOEMAKER!!!

and the Little Old Lady who lives in a Shoe is NOT a tale, it's a poem! yeish...

In the words of a WONDERFUL movie, shoes are the only adornment that will always look good and be in style. Clothing shrinks or balloons as you gain and loose weight, scarfs are useless in the summer, accessories go in and out of style, but shoes... there is something we can ALL appreciate.

Besides there's the glorious symbolism in shoes... fairy tales and shoes do the same thing... they TAKE you somewhere else; maybe even "put you in someone else's shoes:" So polish those pumps and show them some true appreciation!

ROFL

Um, It's because of the Shifters-remember? We mortals have been jealous of the tiny feet thing since the beginning of time. It was a constant source of conflict. Until the Wary went into obscurity and all their stories became fairy tales and then got mixed up and turned around til they were poems about old women living in shoes, etc. But the facts are still evident in most. There is something about being small in every shoe story. Think about it.

The little old lady and her kids have to be tiny to fit in them. The ELVES-come one. Cinderella-duh. Ruby slippers-supposedly could only fit the young and innoncent. Plus there's that whole munchkin thing to consider. Hermes was famous not only for his flying shoes-but also the tiny size of his feet. Strange fact. And his body for that matter. He was a 'Little' god. The League boots-this ones a little more obscure. but I think the smallness comes in depth perception. Or one could say the relation to the Wary has more to do with immortality-which is a bit like wearing those boots, feeling like your taking one step and suddenly being a thousand miles into the future. Time is a blink. :)

hope you enjoy those thoughts my dear ;) love you!
